The Attitude Era - WWE DVD Cover Art

In the late-90s, WWE was struggling for ratings survival while a cultural shift in the viewing audience’s taste was occurring. “Saying your prayers and taking your vitamins” had lost its luster amongst the rebellious masses who preferred “flipping the bird” and “laying the smackdown”… Enter Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Rock, Triple H and Mankind and the notorious crop of edge and fearless Superstars who ushered in The Attitude Era. Now in this 3DVD set fans can own all the infamous moments from this controversial and revolutionary era that redefined sports entertainment for an entire generation. Over 8-hours of envelope-pushing content includes all the agression, antics and innuendos that proved to be the perfect cocktail for an explosion of popularity.

I really hope they show some of the truly contrevesial moments from the Attitude Era!! So many memories on that cover

  3. Brad Attitude says:

I prefer Mark D’s cover of the Attitude Era for the Fantasy Concept over WWE’s one.

  4. pmdmf says:

I’m wondering why they put Lita in between the APA and not with the Hardys.

  5. Dana says:

I just wanna know why they put Yurples the Clown on the cover and not Road Dogg, Xpac and Mr Ass.

  6. Ryan says:

Basically, what I want is every single episode of smackdown and raw is war in a bigggg DVD case, with all the PPV’s in between, I will pay good money for this, from around ’96 to 2002, is this even possible? I mean I know its on tape SOMEWHERE but is it purchasable?

There needs to be multiple volumes of the Attitude Era DVD by the looks of how many comments this article has, how many page views it got and how high pre orders are already. The Attitude Era looks to be a HUGE market still and WWE would be silly not to make any more volumes. Nitro DVD did really good numbers and ended up getting a Vol 2 release because of it.

    • Avatar of Daniel Bee Daniel Bee says:

Agreed, and this is the response on a site that’s small and off the radar compared with WWE themselves. The views are crazy compared to the comments. Sales likely to be great, boosted also from Christmas.

My view is I’m guessing they see an “Attitude” type release in their PG environment as quite contentious so wouldn’t like to plan more volumes in advance. I don’t mean about the recent election and Linda. I say this with a little bit of background because I talked to a WWE employee in Home Entertainment about this very subject in 2010 (how could I not mention an Attitude Era DVD given the opportunity? ;)) and that was the message he put across – how they were gonna approach an Attitude DVD in this family friendly era, and also if they could do it justice.

      • Anonymous says:

It looks like WWE have changed their stance on DVD releases now. Back in 2010 it was very rare for WWE to release a TV-14 DVD (I think there was only 1 maybe 2) but in 2012 there have been quite a lot of TV-14 releases like Rock’s, Punk’s, Lesnar’s, FCA, ECW and others.

Maybe you could possibly get in touch again and see if there has been a change of what content is allowed now?

  8. H-Man says:

Hey, who’s the Ref beside Vince? Is that Jimmy Korderas? Cause if it is. To quote Joey Styles…. “Oh my GAD!”

    • Robert says:

Man… If any referee needed to be graced on the cover, it should have been Earl Hebner. All the beatings and cr@p that poor guy put up with during the Attitude Era, most notably during the McMahon-Helmsley days? All of Baby Earl’s shoving matches with Triple H when he would push Earl around? And even though it was bowling shoe ugly… The Ref .vs. Ref match at Invasion against Nick Patrick? Earl deserved a spot more than Jimmy Korderas!

  9. Anonymous says:

  10. ryan says:

i see marc mero and Jacqueline but no SABLE? she was a HUGE part of the attitude era

  11. Anonymous says:

Anyone else think the cover looks kinda like Sgt. Pepper from the Beatles?

  12. Anonymous says:

i can’t wait for the match listing

  13. Brahmabull32 says:

    Where is Chyna???
Im hoping they include Vince beating Triple H for the WWE Championship.

  14. captain planet says:

Didn’t notice this before – they put the blob over the ‘F’ part of the Attitude Era logo. I guess they’re allowed to use the name/logo again, but not for advertising any new product; just archival footage. Interesting…I’m glad they waited until they got clearance to release non-censored video footage. I wonder how long they’ve been wanting to do this, in that case?

  15. Mike Rotch says:

Reminds me of Sgt Pepper album cover. Is there grapefruits on the cover? Cool

  16. Lendus1985 says:

Cannot wait for this one! Looks awesome, not what I was expecting at all. Does anyone know what the score is with getting hold of this in the UK?

  17. Dave says:

WWEshop has it up for preorder and they an all new documentary with over 6 hrs of special features. So looks like we may get close to a 1.5-2 hr doc.

  18. mommy says:

any chance we will see a match listing today, it can’t be to long now

  19. mommy says:

140 comments in less than 24 hours, shows the excitement on this dvd

this era really was the best ever and i wish it was still around

  20. Vincenzzzzzo says:

I like the cover for this… How they incorporated all the Attitude Era happenings on the cover, i.e. puppies, Mae Youngs “son”, the Hardcore title, G-TV, etc. is pretty cool. I’m excited to see what the format of this will be like. It doesn’t matter what it is – match compilation or a documentary type, it will be good regardless.

Obviously, they will show alot of RAW clips, but I’m mostly interested in seeing old SmackDown! footage from this era on here. At times, SmackDown was better than RAW during the Attitude Era. One episode that sticks out is the one where Triple H was feuding with Mr. McMahon, and Vince put Hunter in a Buried Alive, Inferno, and Casket match throughout the night. I hope they cover some of that on this.

The match listing will be very interesting. There will be repeats, but it’s only fair. You cannot have a DVD focusing on the Attitude Era and leave out some of the most important moments – regardless if they’ve been released before. So get the box of tissues ready, because once people see the Mankind vs Undertaker Hell in a Cell match on the listing, they will start to cry and whine like always.

    • Dave says:

Yea, I remember that SD. Vince put HHH in five gimmick matches – choke slam match, inferno, casket, boiler room brawl and bullrope match where he had to win 3/5 to be in the 6 pack challenge at unforgiven. Pretty cool concept.

Hopefully they put the tag team buried alive match with Rock/foley vs Taker/Big Show

      • Vincenzzzzzo says:

Yes, the tag team buried alive match was really good.

      • Anonymous says:

Whoa, I forgot about that Smackdown. I had to look it up, it was the September 23 1999 episode. One of the last before Russo left. I’d like to see that and the six pack challenge.

Man, we’d better get at least one more volume if this is from 1997-2002(or even longer) because there is a LOT of ground to cover.

      • Anonymous says:

WWE should go all out and put Vince McMahon winning the title on here.

        • Simon says:

Am also hoping that they’ll include Steve Austin, The Rock & Vince McMahon vs. The Undertaker, Triple H & Shane McMahon (w/ Shawn Michaels as the special referee) from the May 10, 1999 episode of Raw – the main event of the highest rated episode in the show’s history.

  21. The Top Rope says:

I hope it has a lot of footage from Raw as i have all of the Attitude Era PPV’s on Tagged Classics! Which all have the WWF logo intact and unedited.

  22. Anonymous says:

I don’t see TV14 on the cover! Does anyone know for sure that it is not pg? And i hope it hasn’t got most of the same stuff as the Raw 15th Anniversary dvd has!

  23. mason says:

its missing chyna and vince mcmahon

  24. Anonymous says:

I think Chyna and The Kat should’ve made the cover aswell!

  25. Simon says:

In lieu of a replacement distributor for the UK, have now ordered this from Amazon. DVD plus shipping came to £17.20, which is actually just under the regular SilverVision price for such an item. Sadly though, it most certainly won’t be arriving the day after its release – more like two weeks, I’d imagine.

    • Anonymous says:

Great time for Silvervision to stop releasing dvds when this Attitude Era dvd was the next one! Shame this dvd wasn’t their last pre-order!

      • Simon says:

Tell me about it! It’s also annoying because my Blu Ray player only plays multi-region DVDs, meaning I’ll not only have to wait longer, but miss out on the Blu Ray exclusives too. I’ll probably end up buying the Blu Ray once it’s given a Region B release (whenever that might be), but figured I’d crack on with the DVD in the meantime.

    • Avatar of Y2JON Y2JON says:

I really want the Blu-Ray here in the UK, so looks like I’ll be importing from Australia as they’re the same reason. Unfortunately, Shock, their official supplier don’t ship outside the country. I’ve heard DevotedDVD are good. Any opinions?

  26. warresg says:

who’s that referee at the corner? Why is he important to the attitute era?

  27. Robert says:

BestBuy.com has it listed as TV-14. We can rest easy guys, good stuff headed our way!

  28. Elmer Amel says:

The New Age Outlaws isn’t on the cover? :((((((

  29. Mike says:

They are probably going to release a lot of stuff that’s already been released on other sets. However the WWF logo shouldn’t be blurred out which is great! I’d love the KOTR hell in a cell match with taker and mankind with no annoying blurs.

  30. Giovanni says:

I definitely understand the inspiration for this cover aka (The Beatles – Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band). Younger fans may not, but i do know the importance of the era in pro wrestling.

  31. Nick says:

I hated this cover when I first saw it and then I saw the beatles album and still didn’t get why they copied it, and then I read that Rolling Stone named the Sgt Pepper LH album “the most important rock & roll album ever made” . I know the cover looks silly but if you knew the history of the beatles cover people would understand why this cover was made like that.

  32. Steven says:

I hope a content list will be out either Friday or next week and to everyone who wants the Hart Foundation included in this Attitude Era set, not going to happen because Bret was against it and they were the last generation, they might’ve called HBK a Degenerate which help start DX but besides Owen the rest of them was the last generation.

    • Vince McMahon himself has said that the attitude era started when bret hart pushed him over on Raw. Bret was one of the architechts of the attitude era, he just didn’t like the smutty side of it. And I think that’s the part that’s best forgotten. I wouln’t rule out there being some Hart / Austin stuff because that was the real transition and they might want to show at least some of that. But we’ll see. The cove doesn’t suggest we’ll see any Hart Foundation, but the New Age Outlaws aren’t on there either and I can’t imagine that they wont be on the DVD somewhere.

      • The Top Rope says:

To be fair the actual Attitude Era didn’t really start until 1998 with the scratch logo. After Vince done that promo about the WWF changing direction in December 1997

        • There are different theories and ts not necessarily defined by when the logo was used. Some say it ended at wrestlemania 17. This is why I am interested to see where they draw the lines on this set.

  33. Mongoose Wizard says:

I know the photo of Vince on the Cover has something to do with the St. Valentines Day Massacre so we might see something on there from that PPV

  34. Maple Leaf says:

Where’s Chris Benoit & The Radicalz .. or the Hart Foundation?

Forget it, I’m not buying this rubbish!!!

  35. Brad Attitude says:

this looks like it was done from a kid’s cut and paste scrapbook …

  36. indyfan says:

I really hope they include HHH vs Taka Michinoku and Taka vs Great Sasuke. This thing will be chalked full of repeats though

    • Anonymous says:

I’d like to see those matches but lets face it they could do 10 volumes and those matches would not be on this. Maybe Taka/Sasuke if we got a volume two of Highest Flyers.

    • Anonymous says:

Any word on the Best Buy exclusives? It was reported on this website in August that that store would have some.

  37. [...] WWE DVD News snagged an exclusive peak at the DVD/Blu-ray cover art for WWE’s upcoming release The Attitude Era but since nothing in this world is exclusive anymore you can check it out below, watermark and all. [...]

  38. ZJ says:

Where are the New Age Outlaws and X-Pac? I love the concept otherwise!

  39. Supersonic says:

When can we expect to see the shit that matters – the content listing?

  40. rohfan81 says:

im really hoping for the 6 pack challenge from unforgiven 99, rock vs hhh iron man, austin vs taker vs kane breakdown, and taker vs kane with austin as the ref and the 4 way at wrestlemania 2000

  41. Dave says:

Looks like according to WWEDVD.com.au, the synopsis says:

“he Austin/McMahon rivalry; The invention of Hell in A Cell, TLC, Brawl For All and more; The revamping of Superstars entrance music; All the top stars such as The Rock, Stone Cold Steve Austin, Mick Foley (all three of them!), DX, Undertaker, Edge & Christian, Chris Jericho, Christ Jericho, Trish Stratus, The McMahons, Kane, The APA, Goldust, Val Venis and more.”

So we can assume the first HIAC from Bad Blood and TLC from Summerslam 2000 will be on and some Brawl for All fights. Also could possibly be a match/doc hybrid…like a short 30-40 minute doc covering certain events followed by couple dozen matches.

  42. alva says:

Its that Gilbert? By Vince in the cover

  43. alva says:

Ugly Linda cover lol. I mean ugly ass cover well as I said wwe was waiting for the election to be over to release or not to release.

  44. Nick says:

cover doesn’t matter to me, its just going to face sideways in my dvd cabinet anyway.

  45. Anonymous says:

Some people that should have been on the cover: X-Pac, New Age Outlaws, Headbangers, Too Cool, Ken Shamrock, British Bulldog, Cactus Jack

    • Anton says:

It doesn’t matter about Cactus Jack on the cover. Mankind is already on the cover, and did more for the Attitude Era than Cactus Jack.

  46. Anonymous says:

I love the cover, It kinda reminds me of the top 50 superstars of all time dvd cover.

  47. Joey says:

I was expecting better for the cover but I guess it will do

  48. nightmare says:

I am kind of shocked to see gangrel on the cover I mean I know he was with the WWE in those days and I feel had the most coolest entrance ever I mean coming up through the fire was kick ass nobody has ever had a better entrance since then .

  49. Anonymous says:

So what are some of the repeats you guys think we will be seeing? I’m guessing on:

    Hart vs Austin WM13
Mankind vs Undertaker KOTR 98(yes this has been on a lot of releases, but for something like this you kind of have to include it)
    Austin vs Michaels WM14
    Austin vs Rock WM17

As far as unreleased items, i’d like to see:
    WM2000 4 way
    HHH vs Rock Iron Man
D-Lo vs Val Venis SummerSlam 98(yes this is on an Anthlogy I know)
    “Choppy Choppy Your Pee Pee”

    • Anonymous says:

I thought of two other repeats: TLC at WM2000 and Mankind winning the belt for the first time. The main events of the Sep and Oct 98 IYHs still haven’t been on anything so maybe we’ll get that here or on Best of IYH.

  50. Joey says:

Ps also the rating, better be pg-14 not the pg bs like these days

  51. Joey says:

Pretty stupid cover, we now need the matches and features, did I mention stupid cover?

    • Joeyisaretarf says:

Pretty stupid comment from a person thats obviously part of the illegal immigrant population. Go back to your own country boy!

  52. LeagleO1 says:

WWE has to be ribbing us…

  54. wrestlingfan says:

    Cool Sgt Peppers Band cover!

  55. Sean says:

This is going to be an Awesome DVD! I can not wait for this DVD to be released.

  56. Paul says:

No Harts because Bret left before the attitude era really began.

    • RabidHeat says:

Totally right. Yes, his feud with Austin bridged the gap and blurred the lines between the two eras, but the whole point was that Bret’s heyday was from the previous era. Bret wouldn’t even want to be part of this DVD; he has always stood up against everything that the Attitude Era and the “anti-hero” concept embodied.

And there’s no Owen footage because, well…ask Martha Hart.

  57. JEFF TRIGGER says:

    NO HARTS AT ALL. SICKENING

  58. JEFF TRIGGER says:

    NO BRET HART. UNREAL

  59. Jake wilson says:

I just hope we get a bunch of unreleased matches, thats all i care about.

  60. Steven says:

At first glance I thought Trish was Sunny then I looked closer and saw it was Trish.

  61. Steven says:

Chyna should be on the cover more than Jacqueline or Al Snow. Chyna was the first and only woman to win the IC title, first woman to be in the Royal Rumble, plus a huge part of DX. DX for me will always be the triple threat of HBK, Triple H, and Chyna, everything that DX did was pure gold, just like the nWo.

    • RabidHeat says:

The thing is, she is now a hardcore porn star who has filmed a WWE parody movie in which she has a threesome with “Vince” and his daughter “Stephanie”, or so the character’s appearances imply. You can hardly blame WWE for now ignoring her existence.

  62. RabidHeat says:

OMG, they have ACTUALLY gone and surprised me! After all these boring covers, WWE have finally put a little creativity into it! ‘Sgt. Pepper’ theme…lovin’ it! Although I find it hilarious that Jimmy Korderas gets on to the cover when some vital superstars from the era don’t (Gunn/Road Dogg/Chyna, et. al). And VERY surprised to see Marc Mero on there! Thought WWE hated his guts. Just shows how much they must hate Chyna though, eh?

I love that they are addressing the WWF/E name change with the blotch of green paint covering that part of the logo! Seems like they’re getting a little prouder of their past. :) I think it’s no coincidence that we finally see this cover the day after Linda McMahon lost her election campaign.

  63. [...] following image, courtesy of WWEDVDNews.com, features the cover art for the upcoming WWE: The Attitude Era DVD, which is scheduled to be [...]

  64. Jesus Lopez says:

I hope the content/match listing is not compromised by heavy editing or material pulling due to today’s wwe standards, ethics and guidelines. I look forward to this release-but the cover does suck (it!).

  65. Ryan says:

Decent cover. The novelty of this era is gone for me. It just doesn’t hold up IMO. I liked it then just not now. I’ll probably pass, maybe check it out on Netflix down the road.

  66. nightmare says:

I don’t know what to say on this I mean Holy Crap they even have Kurt Angel with hair wow that beyond old shot .It all depends on what on this that will decide if it will sell big or fail .

    That;s the main question .

  67. Paul says:

Wish they would have had the pic from Raw magazine back in 1999 of sable holding the puppies one in each hand up by her chest instead of the one they put in of each. Also they edited the blood off of vince mcmahons hand in the picture they have on the cover. It was originally from st valentines day massacre in 1999.

  68. jamie says:

so the UK don’t get any new dvds? for how long will that last, that is ridiculous.

  69. Paul says:

Awesome. I can’t wait for this blu ray. Have it pre-ordered through Best Buy.

  70. Vincenzzzzzo says:

I hope they start off this DVD with the “Pushing the envelope” interview Vince did at the opeing of an episode of RAW back in 1997 or 1998. It’s only appropriate.

    • HankHill says:

The promo you’re thinking of it “The Cure for the Common Show”.

The cover is…unique. Not particularly good, IMO. They should have done it like the old WWF Attitude video game cover. This makes the era look hokey and stupid, which it wasn’t.

  71. slim says:

Where the hell is roaddog billy gunn and xpac???? They could easily replace yurple jackie and jimmy korderas. Think they made a big mistake leaving them off.

  72. Aaron says:

    just my opinion.
Aside from a few good matches, that whole era just irks me. it was dark, over the edge, and downright obnoxious. Thank god for Nitro.

I know i’m in the minority, but I prefer today’s product over Attitude. The cover isn’t bad though.

  73. The Grease says:

That is the worst cover for a set they have ever produced

  74. John says:

The puppies are so cute! What a great cover! I am looking foward to what the content is and looking foward to buying this!

  75. Bill says:

Reminds me of the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper album

  76. Simon says:

The side-on shot gives the impression that this might come in an Amaray case. Anybody know either way?

  77. mason says:

lovw all the attitude era stuff on the bottom like the paint of the scratch logo where the f is dont know if any of you noticed but next to the wwe logo in the center its very small but its gillberg he is on the right

  78. Steven says:

Attitude Era was the best era in wrestling hands down no argue for discussion. If you didn’t like it or grow up during this era don’t even comment because it’s no point in trying to disagree.

  79. Mike Tenay says:

OMG That cover is AMAZING, just genius, love how the DX spray pain covers the “F”

  80. BCX says:

Love the cover, shame it won’t be released in Europe :(

  81. Simon says:

This cover is a thing of beauty. Great job, WWE.

  82. Anonymous says:

Digging that cover. Can’t believe they put Shawn’s Playgirl picture on it.

  83. Avatar of Joe Israel Joe Israel says:

Things I never thought I would see on a DVD cover:
    1. Yurple the clown
    2. Mae Young’s child-hand
    3. Katie Vick’s pom poms

  84. Megabarger says:

Also everyone remember that all content will NOT be blurred in this DVD as the world wildlife foundation and WWE came to the agreement that WWE can use the “Scratch” Logo in past footage but cannot use it now or in the future. Last months “Brock Lesnar: Here Comes The Pain re-release was the first WWE dvd to have no content blurred.
Note: The only blurring or censoring that will be done is the WWF watermark that is in the bottom left of the screen will be censored will a BOLD WWE Logo, that’s the only censoring in future WWF related DVDs.

    • Dave says:

On the nWo DVD, they didn’t put the bold WWE logo on the Rock/Austin vs. Nash/Hogan/Hall match but they did on the No Way Out 2002 promo.

  85. Marty says:

LOVE the Sgt. Pepper’s look. Green spraypaint covering just the right area of the scratch logo is a nice touch.

  86. indyfan says:

that is one ugly cover! lets just hope whats really important is ok, like the content.

  87. John Peterson says:

Awesome cover.hope the content will be solid

  88. Steven says:

I like the cover art hopefully it will be rated R since Linda lost. A lot of DX moments judging by the cover of both HBK and Triple H.

  89. Esome1980 says:

    It has yurple! Def buying!

  90. I like the painted out logo, not sure about the rest of it. Never thought I’d see GTV on a DVD cover!

  91. Dave says:

I noticed they have the Steph wedding photo from 2002, so looks like content will range from 97 to 02 (until the name change).

    • Unless its for the 1999 wedding with Test and Triple H. They quite often use pics from the wrong time frame. That isn’t what I would call the Paul Bearer of the attitude era either, so who knows. I’m not getting much of a 97 vibe from this at all. Match list will be interesting to say the least.

      • Dave says:

Paul Bearer had that look until mid-97 – i think afer Taker “burned” Paul’s face at Revenge of the Taker 97.

Some say aspects of the attitude era started in 1997 – Austin/Bret, RAW going to RAW IS WAR, the Screwjob, DX, etc. Some even say 96 was the launch with the Austin 3:16 promo. I’m sure those will be covered somewhere on the DVD.

        • I would think if it covers 97 then Bret would be on the cover, but I’m guessing of course. I’m hoping that’s the case. I’m really interested to know where they start and end this set because people have different ideas about that as you say.

  92. The Other Dave says:

This cover reminds me of the album cover of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Great Stuff.

  93. Matthew says:

the cover don’t know have ever notice this but the dvd cover looks like the beatles Sgt.Pepper’s album

  94. Dave says:

Looks awesome! can’t wait til the listing is out…which could be any day now.

    • its gonna be quite hard for us to get the listings like we have done prior to this. silvervision helped in that regard, still dare say it will be up very soon

      • Avatar of Daniel Bee Daniel Bee says:

If WWE get a copy of the DVD to me before November 20th, it’ll be pretty easy.

Basically it’s whoever can grab each version first (DVD/Blu-ray/exclusive) and pass along the content listing.

        • Anonymous says:

Does this mean the days of getting match listings three months in advance is over now?

          • Avatar of Daniel Bee Daniel Bee says:

Maybe so, but advance copies of major titles (DVD) usually reach me about a month before their release date so at least we have this avenue to get content listings. Hopefully Shock Australia will step in, or who knows, a new European distributor may just carry on in the same vein as Silver Vision.

  95. i dont like it. shame i was really having high hopes for this cover. still gonna be great content mind. defo contender for dvd of the year

  96. john rega says:

When do we get a match listing?

  97. Dave Smith says:

This cover is absolute quality the best in a long long time I liked CM Punk’s DVD cover but apart from that the best cover in years!!! Love it! If the match listings and content is just as amazing this is going to be the best DVD in years!!!

  98. James says:
